The Case for God in Seven Minutes or Less….

While taking part in a debate on the existence of God at the Literific Society at Queen’s University Belfast, I had to give a seven minute speech. (This is slightly different from what I actually said since I tried to include some responses to objections that had been raised.) 

In claiming that there is a God, I am not claiming that we can logically establish the existence of God with complete certainty.

The Scriptural Case for Apologetics: 7 Quick Points

1) Every Christian is an apologist, for every time we  clarify our beliefs to a sceptic, we are defending it from misunderstanding and misrepresentation. Every time we explain why we believe we are offering an argument for the faith. The only question is “will we do apologetics well or poorly”?

Difficult Text, Quick Answer: The Sacrifice of Isaac

Q: How could a good God command Abraham to sacrifice his only son? 

A: As always, it’s important to read the whole text and not to take it out of context. Any Israelite encountering this story for the first time would have been genuinely horrified when they heard  God’s command.

Difficult Text, Good Question, Quick Answer: Sticks, Stoning and the Sabbath

Q: I can’t make much sense of this story; it seems as if God is acting in an unfair, unjust manner.

Numbers 15 v 32 One day while the people of Israel were in the wilderness, one of them was caught gathering wood on the Sabbath day.33 He was arrested and taken before Moses and Aaron and the other judges.34 They jailed him until they could find out the Lord’s mind concerning him.

Can New Atheists Condemn the Holocaust?

If you’re a New Atheist don’t have a conniption. Questions like this often arise in debates about atheism and morality; it is important to clarify why some theists believe that morality provides evidence against atheism. But of course you can (and almost certainly do) condemn genocide and barbarism.
